Dr. Midha is currently Immediate Past-President of the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP), after serving a four year term as President (2006 – Sept 2010). He is a Visiting Professor of Pharmacy, University College London, UK (2008 – present), as well as Adjunct Professor of the College of Pharmacy and Nutrition, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Canada. He was Professor of Pharmacy, University of Saskatchewan from 1979 to 1995 and Coordinator of a Medical Research Council Program Grant entitled “Towards More Efficacious Use of Psychotropic Drugs”. This research group he created was converted into Pharmalytics Inc., a not-for-profit Drug Metabolism, Drug Disposition Institute of the University of Saskatchewan, and Dr. Midha served as Chair of the Board of Directors from 2000 – 2006. In March 2006 the research institute was privatized by the University. Dr. Midha became a founder of this privatized unit named as Pharmalytics Ltd.

Dr. Midha has received numerous accolades, awards and recognitions for his scholarly work and service from around the world which include: Diamond Jubilee Medal Canada, commemorating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee (2012); Honorary Life Membership in the Canadian Pharmacists Association (2011); Council’s Medal from the General Council of Pharmacists of Spain (2010); Emeritus Member of the Presidents Circle (2009); Honorary Membership in the Hungarian Society of Pharmaceutical sciences (2009) National Academies of Sciences, Institute of Medicine, National Academies of Engineering USA ; Honorary Membership in the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana (2009); Honorary Membership in The Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain (2008); Doctor Honoris Causa (D.Sc.), Semmelweis University, Budapest, Hungary (2007); The Plenary Award of the Federal Council of Pharmacy, Brazil (in recognition of contributions to improve the health in the world (2007); Honorary Membership in The Indian Pharmaceutical Association, Mumbai (2006); the “Eminent International Scientist Award” presented by the Indian Drug Manufacturers Association at the Eighth Pharmaceutical Analysts’ Convention in recognition of his valuable and devoted contribution as a Scientist of Indian Origin excelling in the international field of pharmaceuticals (2004); Pharmaceutical Sciences World Congress Research Achievement Award from the FIP (2004); Member of Honor in the Romanian Academy of Medical Sciences, Bucharest, Romania (2003); the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal in Canada (commemorative medal for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s Golden Jubilee) (2002); Distinguished Career Award, Canadian Society for Pharmaceutical Scientists (2001); appointed as Member of President’s Circle, National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering and Institute of Medicine, USA (1999); Distinguished Lectureship Award, The Nagai Foundation, Tokyo, (1999); Outstanding Achievement Award, American Association of Indian Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAIPS), (1995); Canada’s highest award, the Order of Canada (1995); Distinguished Researcher Award from the University of Saskatchewan (1994); Heinz Lehmann Award for Outstanding Achievement Award in Neuropsychopharmacology from Canadian College of Neuropsychopharmacology (1993), American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists Research Achievement Award in Analysis and Pharmaceutical Quality (1992), Kolthoff Gold Medal Award from American Pharmaceutical Association (1989); and McNeil Research Award from the Association of Faculties of Pharmacy of Canada (1984).

Dr. Midha’s leadership positions include Immediate Past-President of FIP (Sept 2010 – present); President of FIP 2006 – Sept 2010, Vice-President of FIP 1998 to 2006, Chairman of the Board of Pharmaceutical Sciences of FIP 1988-1996, Member of the Board of the FIP Foundation for Education and Research 1998-2003, Expert Member of Board of Pharmaceutical Sciences of FIP 1980-1988, Co-Chair of the AAPS sponsored Bio International Conferences held in 1989, 1992, 1994, 1996, 1999, 2003, 2005 and 2008, Chair of the Pharmaceutical Sciences Grants Committee of the Medical Research Council of Canada 1984-1988, and Co-Chair of the AAPS Workshop on Bioanalytical Method Validation 1990 and 2000.

Dr. Midha is a member of the Expert Advisory Panel on Drug Evaluation and International Pharmacopoeia of the World Health Organization, 1993-present. Dr. Midha in 2005 co-chaired the FIP/WHO BCS Task Force to update Multisource Generic Pharmaceutical Products: Guidelines on Registration Requirements to Establish Interchangeability. Dr. Midha has been a member of the Blue Ribbon panel, U.S. Food and Drug Administration Individual and Population Bioequivalence Experts (1998-2002).

In April 2010 Dr. Midha served as co-Moderator at the EPF & EUFEPS Workshop on EMEA Draft Guideline on Validation of Bioanalytical Methods in Brussels. And in January 2009 Dr. Midha served as Moderator at EUFEPS BABP Network Open Discussion Forum: Revised European Guidelines on Bioequivalence, Bonn Germany. Also of note, Dr. Midha served as a Scientific Committee member of and Invited speaker at: From Drug Delivery Systems to Drug Release, Dissolution, IVIVC, BCS, BDDCS, Bioequivalence & Biowaivers, Athens, Greece, May 2009 sponsored by AFEA.

Dr. Midha is a Fellow of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS), American Pharmacists Association/Academy of Pharmaceutical Research and Science, Chemical Institute of Canada and Canadian College of Neuropsychopharmacology. Dr. Midha with his co-workers has published over 300 scientific articles and book chapters. In 2010 he was invited to become a Member of the Advisory Board of Indian Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences. He is a past member of the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, European Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, International Pharmacy Journal and Pharmaceutical Research. He has co-edited and Topics in Pharmaceutical Sciences and Proceedings of Bio International Conferences since 1989.

Dr. Midha is an active member of AAPS and has served on the AAPS International Affairs Committee, the AAPS Awards Committee, Nomination Committee, PPDM Fellows Review Committee, AAPS Fellow Committee, AAPS Globalization Task Force and AAPS Strategic Visioning Committee.

Dr. Midha’s current attention is focused on the development of science based regulatory processes and health policies, especially affordable medicines for neglected populations. His research findings and key invited presentations to US FDA Office of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Office of Generic Drugs (2008-2011) has resulted in new guidance to regulate Highly Variable Drugs/Products, Narrow Therapeutic Index Drugs/Critical Dose Drugs and Modified Release Dosage Forms with both complex release and onset of efficacy being critical.
