Carla Marcella Caramella is a full professor in Biopharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Technology at the Department of Drug Sciences, University of Pavia, Italy. She received her higher education, Pharm.D., in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology, at the University of Pavia. She is currently the Director of the Master course in Pharmaceutical Technology and Regulatory Affairs. She was director of the Italian Interuniversity Consortium Tefarco Innova (2002-2004) and Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy (2003-2006).
She has a number of societal, society and editorial board duties. She is a member of the Subcommittee for the Evaluation and Marketing Authorization Office of medicinals appointed by the Italian Agency for Medicines (AIFA). She also is an Expert (EMA) for the Quality assessment of medicinals.
Current research interests are in the design and evaluation of delivery systems and include: mucoadhesive gels for buccal and vaginal antiviral treatment, films for ocular therapy, mucoadhesive spray solutions for mucositis treatment, new therapeutic platforms for wound healing. She has published about 200 scientific publications, including journal and conference papers, and given 90 invited talks.
She is an AAPS Fellow (2001) and the recipient of AFI (association for Industrial Pharmacists) award (2002, 2004 and 2010) for her cooperation with the Association as an academic member, award of “Commendatore al merito della Repubblica Italiana“, First recipient of the “Ralph Shangraw Memorial prize “ by IPEC America Foundation, JDDST Award for the best article published on Journal of Drug Delivery Science and Technology in 2011.
